It really depends on your work schedule, and how many classes you're willing to take. I know some people that took between 2 and 8 years to get their AA.
An AA can be good for your resume, but depending on your chosen profession, you really should be thinking about what classes will transfer to a four year university. I knew a lot of people that started out trying to get their AA, and then later decided that they really wanted to go to a university for their BA/BS. They first realized that they can make a much better living with a full degree, and then they realized that many of their AA classes didn't transfer.
You would be better off taking the classes that transfer, and while you're in college, get a job in the industry you would like to work (ie internship or bottom-rung job). In the end, you'd be better off with a few of those core classes in your profession, and a little job experience, than any AA could provide (Of course, there are exceptions such as vocational trade-jobs, such as nursing, auto mechanic, law enforcement, where AA is what you need).
Don't get me wrong, community college offers great experiences and education. However, if you ever even thought about going to a university, drop the AA idea, and get yourself matriculated with a 4 year university. And I don't care if you're 20 or 40, you can be whatever you want to be, and it doesn't matter how long it takes.
Good luck!

It took me exactly a year and a half to attain 68 credit hours with a 3.9 gpa. Some people can get as much done in about a year.... just takes focus.

Not long. It took me 2 years, that's including going to summer school and taking 5 class for one semester.

i changed my major once -- from brit lit to history (pre law curriculum)
then i changed unis three times ... which i don't regret
and even with all that, i graduated in 4 and a half years.
chances are if you avoid all of that nonsense, you could be out in 4 easy, probably even less if you take summer courses.

15 years total! (I took some time off "to find myself" and I found a series of loser jobs.) Total actual in-school time was 4 years.
