the ore is stable and you have to have insentive for the metal to leave its stable complex. that takes energy

Ore is nothing but a compound of the metal. The energy is required to break the compound into its constituents. The atoms are held together by forces (covalent or electrostatic force ..) in a compound, to overcome these forces and break the bond energy is supplied!
