Ok, so if ya'll dont know yet, I'm auditioning for American Idol on September 8th in Minneapolis. This is a question for people who made it to round two (aka Hollywood) or "higher".

DO YOU HAVE TO READ MUSIC?

I mean you are supposed to choose a song to sing for the second audition out of a list, and I was wondering if they just gave you a music sheet, or if they give you a CD (cause I remember a lot of people were listening to cd players while practicing their song..and I mean not everyone is going to have a CD that they brough with that one particular song). I really hope they give you a CD and maybe words, because if not I'm really f*cked.

See, I sing my ear. My mother never got me into anything musical (that is why I love choir since it's the only musical thing I'm in) or anything that helped me read music. I can sort of read music, I mean I know the whole FACE for the spaces and EGBDF for the lines, but I dont know what an A sounds like or what a B sounds like, etc.

No. If you're still unsure, ask someone when you audition. They'll let you select a song and the producer should be able to pull that from his stack of music. After doing the show for 5 years, I'm sure they have a good archive of sheet music.

Also, even if you know how to read music, there's no point if you don't understand pitch, where the music notes are located in relation to tone. Two different sounding music notes may have the same name. This isn't factoring in whether the note is flat or sharp. Is it a G sharp (G#) or G flat?

American Idol provides contestants with vocal coachs.

You might have some more researching to do. Good luck.

I was at the East Rutherford auditions, and if your stupid, retarded, or gay YOUR IN. Goto the audition yourself, see what I mean. Wasted 600 dollars of my money, stood in line a total of 14 hours, and 3 days of my life I will not get back. All for absolutely nothing. On the bright side, I got to hang out in New York City for a day. Just go and see for yourself. After you do, ask yourself if it was worth it.

You need formal training of some sort. Yes, you need to know how to read music. Go this time and don't make a complete fool out of yourself than study under a professional for the next year and try again next year.

Simple answer? Buy a tuner. You can get a nice one for like $20 that will actually give you a generated song of 7 octaves worth of notes. You just select your note and it gives it to you. Korg is generally the highest regarded brand.

I highly doubt that Bucky knew how to read music-- and he made it through!
