My son and I planted a children's rock garden today. At the nursery he picked the plants (with the owner's guidance), and later decided where they'd be placed (with a little of my guidance). We both dug. He put his rocks in at the end. He also placed the garden ornaments we purchased. Three metal staked ornaments: a bunny, a tracktor, and a motorcycle. He knew just how he wanted them put in as well. He was so proud of his work, and how it looked when we finished. I was proud too.

Of course, I nurtured my son with this project, but I expect his garden will teach him about responsibility and nurturing too.

I think your rock garden is great! When my children were little I would teach them nurturing with plants and gardens and also with animals. I remember my youngest son when we visited my parents he caught a lightning bug in a jar and took it to bed with him. He came down a little later saying he wanted to take his bug outside and let it go. He cried, "Do you think he has a family?". This was so sweet and I knew he had empathy and caring for all creatures.

There is always the question between nurture and nature.

After raising three kids who now have kids, I have come to the conclusion that nature is sometimes stronger than we can imagine.

Continue to nurture. But, don't faint when the same little boy takes a dump on the garden, then gives his dad the finger.

I am just talking reality here It is so easy with little ones to be all sunshine and lollipops. Then they turn into teenagers.

Yes, I will write a book.
