Because people who specialize in certain areas, like me an Computers, can answer questions, and not be dragged into questions like, are my toes oversized.

It's because a lot of people have extra knowledge in certain areas. They like helping people find the answer to the problems, but they don't like to have to sort through questions about pregnancy if they only have extra knowledge about computer programming.
I often times stick only to a particular catagory when answering questions rather than the general home, where all questions are placed as well.

It's all a big conspiracy, everytime they force you to pick a topic they are tracking your question....eventually they will use all that useless information and take over the worlds supply of toilet paper! It will be a sad day.

I think it is so that if you answer and you have a specialty, for instance, history, you can go straight there. Also, if you have a question and want to see if anyone else asked something close you can browse the questions.

so that people with expertise in that field can find your question faster. if it went under general, there are so many questions it would probably be overlooked by the person who could really help. people tend to pull up the subject they are interested in. with me it's medicine.
