Assassination is murder of a "prominent person", usually for political reasons. I don't know who decides what a person's prominence is in order to call it an assassination; I think it has more to do with motive.

Add: The above person is wrong. Assassinations aren't usually done in secret. Its public nature has more effect. And if someone shot Bush on the street, it would still be an assassination. Boy, that's a fun word to type.

I'm pretty confident that you have to be a political figure of some sort to be assassinated. Assassination also is the sort of thing that happens in secret. A guy walking up to President Bush on the street and shooting him would probably be properly called a murder, not an assassination.

I believe the word assassination is used when the person kills another perole over or beacuse of a certain political/religious view or standpoint.

The Presidential assassins have done it because they disagree with something they said or some legislation they were going to enact, etc.

Somewho who shoots someone because he wants to is just a cold-blooded murder.
