You CAN but better not to. The nicotine does enter the milk and of course smokers stink of smoke, plus the problem with secondhand smoke. I'm glad she didn't smoke while pregnant - hard part of quitting is over - why start again now??

ANYONE who smokes in the home where there is a baby is going to be affecting the baby's health. Just because the mother doesn't smoke while feeding doesn't mean the smoke before and after isn't still in the air the baby breathes. Smoke sticks in the air, there are no air purifiers or fresheners that REALLY rid the home of cigarette smoking, it sticks to fabrics in the home furniture etc and all of this affects a baby's health.

If the Mother did not smoke while she was pregnant or breastfeeding then no it will not affect the baby. La Leche urges Mothers who smoke to breastfeed but to remember that it does pass into the milk for about an hour per cigarette. So, if she wants to smoke, smoke outside, wash her hands and don't breastfeed for at least an hour after having a cigarette.

its contaminated the milk
its like the food we eat
everything that mother's body receive its affect what mothers produced
and its also blend by the food we eat
FYI (for the mothers who used to apply something on their skin )researcher said that even breast milk is not good for the baby, because they found some residue of lotion and any product that the mother apply on their skin, that can affect the baby's health, so they said that bottled milk is better

Yes the milk will be contaminated..you are taking in many hundreds of different chemicals when you smoke.. I smoke occassionally, so not jumping on the band wagon here. You know it harms you, and it may possibly harm the baby, so why smoke. Give it up.. you baby will be taking in second hand smoke at home..yech.. and the baby will stink of cigarettes

It doesn't contaminate the milk, but it does affects the baby's health, as second hand smoke will affect him. How sad.

Yes
Smoke is absorbed into your blood stream and that will be passed on to your baby exactly the same as smoking whist pregnant

i was always told what ever you eat, drink etc.also passes though your system into the babies system.i would quit until you at least stop breast feeding,( shouldnt really smoke) but if you really have too.just wait until you completely stop breast feeding.
