He started with x dollars.

x - (1/3)x - (2/3)[x - (1/3)x] = 12
(2/3)x - (2/3)x + (2/9)x = 12
x = 12(9/2) = 54

He started with $54, lost $18, leaving $36, then lost $24, leaving him with $12.

Work backwards:

12 is 1/3 of what he had before spending 1/3, which would be 36.

So, after spending 1/3, he was left with $36.

That means $36 is 2/3 of what he started with.

Therefore, he started with 36 / 2 X 3 = $54

Let x = total dollars

If he spent 1/3 of x, he was left with (2/3)x and if he lost 2/3 of the remainder he was left with (1/3)*(2/3)x or (2/9)x = 12. Now divide both sides by 2/9 (invert and multiply)

x = $12 * (9/2)
x = $54

He spent 1/3 of $54 which equals $18 leaving him with $36. He lost 2/3 of that (or $24) leaving him with $12.

To represent a number by fractions, you're taking away from a whole number. A whole number represented by a fraction would be like 4/4, or 1/1, or whatever. Anyway, you take 12 and make it fraction (12/1), then you flip it (1/12), because you have to do that so you multiply it by 1/3. However, the way I do it is...1/3 is one part of 3/3, so I just take 12, which would be the 1/3, and multiply it by 3.

money = 1/3 spent + (1/3 left + 2/3 lost)
money = 1/3 spent + (12 left + 24 lost) { i got the 24 by multiplying the 12 by 2 as he lost twice what he kept - lost 2/3 kept 1/3}
money = 1/3 spent + (36 = remaining 2/3)
money = 18 + 36
money = 54

tried to show you how I got it - hope it makes some sense

1/3 is 12 dollars so 3/3 would be $36, the remainder. if that is 2/3, 1/3 would be 18. 18 * 3= $54 he must have worked at McDonalds.

what's left = 1/3 of 2/3 of what he lost
what he lost = 12 * 3 = 36
$36 was what he had left after spending which is 2/3 now
therefore what he started with was 36/(2/3) = $54 VOILA!!!

ThInk of it this way........
You must think about the fractions
The first thing is to resolve the 1/3 and 2/3 things
The question stipulates two fractions with denominators of 3!
The least submultiple you would be dealing with is 1/3/3= 1/9

Assume that the man had 9X intitiallly
He spent 1/3 of 9X i.e. 3X
So he was left with 9X - 3X = 6X
Of this, he lost 2/3, i.e. 4X
He was left with 6X - 4X = 2X
But you know 2X = $12, so, X = $6
AND,

The man strarted out with 9x6= 54 dollars!
Gwan, ahead!

he started with 54..

he had 54, spent 1/3 .
54/3=18.
so 54-18=36
1/3= 12.
