I recently moved into a new apartment. My phone service was transferred to my new address. A technician came out located the phone line for my new apartment. A member from my church (a retired phone technician) installed a jack in my apartment. Two days later my neighbor complained of not having phone service and feels that the installation of the jack in my apartment caused the disruption to her service. We have different phone companies. When her phone is plugged into the customer side of the phone box outside she gets a dial tone, but her cordless phone inside her apartment gives a "no line" message on her caller id. I called my phone company and was told that my transfer of service and installation of the jack had nothing to do with her problem. Her company wants to charge her to check it out. I have offered to pay the cost if she can prove my installation caused her problem. It's been a week and a no show from her company.

How gracious of you to pay. There may very well have been a problem with the phone jack installation. Perhaps wires got crossed. Your phone company will probably not intervene since she is not their customer, but her phone company must be pathetic to have her sitting there for a week with no service? Perhaps she could switch to your phone service provider. In any event, you did the right thing, and with diplomacy and grace I might add.

It does sound like something happened between her phone jack and the phone box. Can you get your church member to check out the phone jack for your neighbor? It really could have messed up something with her line.

This happens all the time in apartment places. Sometimes the same wires might be daisychained from one apartment to the next one. If your church member installed your line for you, ask him to send a tone from the phone room and check for the tone in her apartment. If it's in there also, chances are he might have stolen her wires for your install.

Unless your phone company 'hands on' investigates, insist the problem had to have been caused by their technician. Don't accept a plea of innocence unless they send someone to personally check her line and yours.
