They could be Carpenter Ants, Pharaoh Ants, Acrobatic Ants, Sweet Ants, or many other varieties. You need to have them identified first so the proper chemical can be used. Most pest control companies will identify them for free. Take in samples to a reputable company and have them identified. Remember-they can't identify if they are squished. You may want to have a professional do the exterminating. You have been treating but it is possible you may have moved nests around between walls with your spraying. It's also possible that the ants are immune to the chemical you are using. A pest control technician is trained to find the source of entry and treat in areas you may not think of. Good Luck

Here is a tip for this problem I received only about a week ago. I have not tried it but it supposedly works miracles in getting rid of all kinds of ants. Sprinkle the contents of packets containing Aspartame which is the artificial sweetener in NutraSweet and Equal. Spread it where the ants are either inside the house or outside in the yard. You may find you have to lightly sprinkle outside and for small black ants you may have to mix with apple juice but try it dry first. Aspartame was supposedly originally developed as an ant poison. This supposedly works on all species of ants including Fire Ants. Good Luck!

HolidayGurl's answer is right on! You have to find out what kind of ant you have before you can set out to control what you have. Try to find out where they are going and what is attracting them, then you can either remove that food source or attractant, and the ants should go away.

Certain ants are attracted to certain things.. like ghost ant are attracted to sugars and proteins, so putting out something like borax will not work. They will find their way around it. (I've killed some with Raid, which leaves a residue, but they just crawled around it to get back inside). Other ants, like acrobat ants, can be killed effectively with sprays like Raid.

Make sure that there aren't any plants touching your house. If there are, cut them back. Plants touching a house serves as a doorway for ants and other pests to gain entry into you house!!

If the problem is really bad, call a service. They may be able to do a one time service for you, or you may need to sign on so they can get rid of the ants!

I read in a "home remedies" book that if you sprinkle baby powder around the base of your outside walls it will keep the ants out. A couple summers ago I had some and tried it - to my amazement, it worked!
Good Luck!

Boric acid. It's a powder. Put it on your doorways, windowsills, wherever you find a trail, in cabinets, and under sinks. The only bad thing is that if you have children or pets then you can only use it in cabinets and places that they can't go because it can make them really sick.

Go along to a chemist shop and talk to the pharmacist there. I think one suggested to me many years ago that borax be put down but I can't recall for sure.
