Personally, I think we should work on education and employment. If you look at the stats for the countries where extremism is rampant, you'd see how high the unemployment and illeteracy rates are. Nepotism and caste systems have to be abolished as well. Atta was a highly intelligent and skilled man. But he couldn't get a job in his home country because no one would hire him. We also have to quit supporting repressive regimes.

All the above statistics were taken from the State Department website. http://www.state.gov/
Our problems with Iran go back to when the U.S. overthrew a democratically elected government and installed a dictator.

Our problem with Iraq is because we backed Saddam. And we failed to back a revolt after the First Gulf War.

We've had a failing middle east policy for decades and now we can change it.

Actually there is another way and it is already happening. All terrorist need money to support there ghastly acts. That money comes primarily from the sale of oil. In about 5 years alternative fuels and hydrogen fuel will make oil irrelevant. When that happens the Arab nations will go back to the dark ages. The end of this story will be, they will have to come to the free world for food. Have you ever heard of a Arab farmer. It's quite difficult to grow wheat in sand.

Yes. Stop behaving in the world in a way which invites terrorism into your country.
As an individual, do everything you can to get to know and understand the 'enemy'. Build bridges at the personal level.
Encourage the use of passive resistance like Gandhi did... If everyone used passive resistance, then there would be no more terrorists using violence and death trying to achieve their ends.

there is no short term solution to terrorism. in the short term only counter violence and diplomacy could diminish the dangers of terrorism.
Long term solutions should include a change in the culture of countries and civilization that produce terrorists. another way is to advance means that will reduce the number of children people have in these places, this will increase the value of human life in these cultures.
there is always the option of total extermination, but that is a doomsday solution.

Listening is key. People you are calling a terrorist might have a good point which you don't hear because you are so busy 'tackling' or 'fighting' or otherwise standing in conflict.
There are few conflict situations that require armed battle to resolve. Extremely few.

If terrorist listen to talk, then they are no terrorist. These people basically are insane, the best is let their own god kill them all. Of course, if only their god really exist.
