AVG is better than both, and its FREE.
The BEST protection is to practice safe computing..(AND of course have ALL the safety protection software necessary to help.)
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

I don't like either. I had McAfee, and got a worm in my computer with it and had a trojan. Then I had to reboot my system... then I got Norton, and the same thing happened. I had to get the GeekSquad to come out and fix it that time, since it was really messed up. Now I use Windows Live OneCare and Spy Sweeper, and have had no problems in the last few months. Norton and McAfee are worthless to me.

This is kind of like which car is better Chevy,Ford or Chrysler. I have had Norton for several years but just got a new Dell computer and it has McAfee on it and it seems to work well so I think as long as you have some good anti-virus and keep it up to date your going to be fine.

Neither. BitDefender is rated the best. I work as an Internet Engineer and BitDefender catches more viruses than any other antivirus program. I've used also both McAfee & Norton but never again. They let viruses thru that BitDefender stopped.

They are both garbage! Most ALL antivirus software sucks! It gives the user a false sense of security! The truth is, they cant keep up with the viruses and malware that is on the net now! Your best virus protection is YOU! Most virus protection slows your system down to a snails pace. Sometimes it will literally screw up a valid software installation! Get wise and learn where viruses originate! Online gaming sites, music download sites, porn sites, and gambling sites are so infested with this crap it aint funny! You want your system free of viruses, adware, spyware and malware? Simple answer! DONT USE THESE SITES!

Norton all the way. Check out cnet.com for ratings on Antivirus software. Cnet's ratings are pretty good for a lot of things.

For the well known computer viruses todate, I will go to McAfee. Norton is obsolete for the technologies today.

The are both terrible - really! I have had to remove McAfee and Norton from many client machines because they could not remove viruses from the infected PC.
I recommend AVG Anti-Virus - it's completely free (for personal use), updates itself, you can schedule virus scans to run automatically etc.....
You can find it and many other free anti-virus applications here -
