Because starting at around 6th grade, they think it's "not cool" to be a Girl Scout any more. Maybe they weren't getting along with the other girls in the troop. Or maybe their leader got burned out and decided to drop the troop. But really they just don't see the opportunities that GS offers in all areas of life. Unfortunately, many think that GS is only about selling cookies. In reality, it's much, much more than that. Too bad for them.

That is the million dollar question. Too busy, not "cool", parents loose interest in having their daughters in GS, and as previous poster said, the leaders of the troops may just be getting burned out. As a parent and leader of a girl in Girl Scouting, I can tell you that now that we're starting our 10th year, it is getting harder and harder for ME to get pumped up at the beginning of each year. But I know that the girls get their enthusiasm directly from me and if I'm down or getting bored, they are sure to get that way too. If only parents would realize what they are missing by not being involved in thier son/daughters scouting experience, more kids would join, and stay in longer.
Good question

A bunch of things contribute to GS's dropping out. It's not cool, they have too many other activities that take priority, or they are just bored. GS has a lot of exciting program changes coming in the near future that will hopefully help keep girls involved in GSing throughout the school years and into adulthood.
