There's a long essay about this in "American Theocracy" by Kevin Phillips in the middle part of his book.

Even the same religion, such as the Anglicans, were very distinctly different in the North and the South, even before the American Revolution.

It's such a complex question, I'm leaving it to the referral made to Kevin Phillips new book instead of giving you a sloppy summary of the differences. BTW, your question is a big part of why America eventually had a civil war.

There were a larger number of Catholics in the South and most of the Quakers and Puritans were in the North.
