It's highly overused. Emotionally disturbed is pretty much normal these days. If you come from a disfunctional family and pretty much all of us do (watch the FAMILY STONE or LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) then you understand emotionally disturbed. OF course, there are degrees. My husband who is now passed was bipolar. I never knew what to expect from him. One day he was the kindest man and within seconds he could become a raging lunatic. He once killed a cat for the sheer pleasure, beating it with a bat after giving it antifreeze. He told my son he would never be anything because he was half Mexican. And, this same man helped the poor and the old, so the community thought the world of him and would have never believed me had I told them he did the things he did. Once he hit me just because I told him his dad was not any different from my mom. I had to save my child once after he refused to help him out of the water when he fell in the lake, telling him it wasn't deep and he could get out himself. Do you get a clear picture of disturbed? Oh, by the way, I left him long before he passed.

It is an old fashioned term from the early part of the 20th century that has held. Instead of saying someone had a mental disorder which could stigmatize they were characterized as emotionally disturbed. It often went with a feeling of high anxiety or behavior that appeared to be abnormal without being too outrageous.

'Crazy' is a general term, it may well be a layman's way of describing somebody with bipolar disorder...somebody with uncontrollable episodes of mood swing, from a super low to a extreme high. boh boh boh ha ha ha boh boh boh ha ha ha..juz to illustrate the case in point.
