It would work as normal XP, however it requires certain extra codecs for DVD and extra hardware for video recording & playback, like a Hauppauge card.

There are better and free Media centers based on Linux

Here's a good guide: http://www.linuxis.us/linux/media/howto/linux-htpc/

XP MC is somewhere inbetween Home & Pro, It has more tools, but isn't good with windows domains. It has the same issue as home with storing network passwords - if that's important to you.

If you buy one, it will come with an infra red receiver & remote - you can buy these for almost nothing on ebay.

Media center is the same as XP with the added feature of a dropdown menu for watching 'media'. You need a remote control and a USB infrared reciever to use the feature. Your computer has plenty of power for it.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/faq.mspx

and make sure your computer meets all the needs. Your RAM and Processor sound ok, but there are additional things you need.
