You should check into options in your area. If you are staying in the dorms, you may have phone access or wireless connections which you can use.

If you are in an apartment you will need phone access or DSL from your phone company if it is available in your building. Or you could get a cable modem if you have cable. Assuming you mean San Francisco when you say bay area, then you might have access to wireless in your area.

There are more than one way to connect to internet.
1. Dial Up ---- needs active phone line
2. DSL -------- needs active phone line
3. Cable internet ---- does not need active phone line
4. Satelite internet --- Does not need active phone line

Check with your local ISP what they offer... the easiest and cheapest is Dial UP which require an installed and working MODEM in your computer and an active phone line to hook up
