Why would you submit a home page url to the search engines? No professional has done that for many years.

Search engines spiders work by following links and will find your site by following an (inbound) link from another site. Because you need as many inbound links as possible in order to rank well then you should be obtaining these links and not wasting time submitting. Directory links are a good place to start http://www.seo-blog.com/directory-links.php

As far as the frequency and depth of crawl are concerned the search engines will obviously crawl more frequently and deeper those sites that they consider important. Is your site important? How many inbound links does it have? What PageRank is it? See Google's 'PageRank Explained' http://www.google.com/technology/
