Unions are a good thing, until the leaders abuse them. Then they do mare harm than good. Many unions are still very fair to the companies and the employees.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
There has been corruption in the union leadership. That is something that has been addressed, however it is no reason for our country to revert to the conditions that drove people to form them in the first place or to throw away the gains that we ALL benefit from today.
The teachers union is a powerful force but is not behind the reason that our school systems are stuck in the mud of a bygone era. Underfunding and lack of vision by our so called leaders have left our education system operating on the the assembly line model while the rest of the world has moved on to the information age.
Business monopolies will only serve themselves.

Unions had their place in the past... some employers of the past really did provide unsafe and unfair working environments.
But as a rule, they have outlasted their usefulness. Nowadays, a union represents it's own political agenda, not the agenda of it's members.
While a purpose for unions may rear it's head again in the future, for the present, more people would be served positively by their removal than by their continuation.
I have spoke with *MANY* teachers and power company employees (and even a few airline employees) who had no complaints with their working arrangements, but were REQUIRED to lose months of pay because SOMEONE in the union SOMEWHERE had a grievence... a grievence they never understood or shared.
I say disband them now! We can reconstitute them when the employers become the problem later.
--------------
In at least one case that I know of, a teacher had to take a pay CUT because of her standing in the union... had she been able to work as a free contractor, she'd have made more. The cost of education ISN'T going to the teachers... it's going to the union leaders and to administrative crap. Remove the union and the AVERAGE teacher's salary will have the opportunity to rise. The truely bad teachers may make less, but then, shouldn't they?

Yes, Yes, and Yes. I believe that unions in general should be a thing of the past. They were great when there were no safety laws to be enforced and workers needed someone to "look out" for their best interest. But, now we have more regulatory laws than we need. The teachers union is well, evil! If we could get them and the gov out of the business of education, our future would then be educated. Of course, I don't see that happening as stupid people are easier to control and manipulate or indoctrinate, however you view it.
g - The only teachers that actually make $15,000 a year are those that work in private (not upper end) schools. It amazes me that my childrens private school can give my kids a better education for $2,600 a year. With teacher's average salary is $18,000. When the local school district (which is considered poor) gets $9,000 (plus extra from all the local businesses because they are "poor") and an average teachers salary of $35,000. Okay if you were to look at these figures, which school would you think has the upper hand? I can tell you first hand public school education sucks. No, it is not because of the individual teachers. The teachers are constrained in what they can teach our kids. It is because of the union and the gov.

Union was a good thing back in the day. Now I belive that the Union is a ploy. I have heard to many stories about the UAW ( United Auto Workers) Letting their or the employees sleep or drink or even do drugs on the clock. And they are their to back them up.
As for the teacher union that is a bunch joke too.

You ever paid any attention to teachers in the grammar schools. Do you have even the slightest hint of the pressure that teachers are under because of the imbalances in the "no child left behind law?" What this law does is demand that teachers not only be teachers but that they also must be disciplinarians and teach from the harsh father model.
Here is the rub. The harsh father model has already failed
in the 1960's. I went as a kid to one of the harsh father model programs. It stunk like a skunk and in failed in the 1980's.
(Thanks to the real god.)
Republicans do not know anything about education. And Unions are quite unrepublican like because Unions fight the millionaires that want to control everything including public schools.
No thanks, that already failed in the 1930's in Europe.

yeah... I know... all those super wealthy teachers out there...
and that poor Rockefeller family... how sad... I don't see how those people are still alive... hahaha
teachers get paid less than almost every other professional career on average... yet you still complain about their union? Just how do you expect to educate kids with teachers that earn like $15,000, which seems to be what you're aiming for?

Unions are simply organizations inside organizations. They want power from the powerful, but they do nothing for the "so called" weak worker. Reminds me of a liberal. They are a tick on the back of a dog. They just suck the money/jobs from the host (company) and spread the disease of "entitlement". Gosh, here I thought working/benefits was a priviledge not a right.
