if you were told that there was a player who played in 12 nba finals series and won 11 of them...a record which no one has come close to equaling....you would be a fool if you didnt think he was the best player ever right?...but yet again people keep overlooking him...once and for all no one was greater or better than the great bill russell

Being from Illinois, i'm contractually obligated to say Michael Jordan. Although i might agree with some arguements for Abdul-Jabbar or Wilt Chamberlain. Also for the person that included both Larry Bird and Kentucky Wildcats, I don't know if you were saying that Larry Bird attended UK or if UK was the greatest ever but you are definitely wrong in the first sense since Bird attended Indiana State University.

When I think about a great basketball player, I think, are they not only good but do they make their teammates better. With that being said, as of now it would have to be MJ because who else can make Scottie Pippen good enough to have his own shoe line from Nike as well. In the future, it could very well be Lebron but it's too early to tell.

Wilt Chamberlain people! Listen to these stats.
Career average of 30.1 ppg
23, 924 career rebounds
22.9 RPG! (all-time leader)
31, 419 career points (all-time leader)
All-Time Record holder for free-throws in a game & career
4-Time NBA MVP
2-Time NBA Champ
Won 33 strait games as a Laker in 71-72 season.
These stats surpass any other player, including Michael Jordan, in every way. He was the most dominant, even more than Shaq, player in NBA history. No one could stop him, including Kareem.

For all you people that said something other than Michael Jordan, you guys are idiots. He gave the NBA its name. He dominated in his time. LeBron will never be able to do what Jordan has done in his career. I would put 1: Jordan, 2: Wilt Chamberlain (sp?). But Jordan by a long shot, no questions asked. He is the face of the NBA like John Madden in football, Babe Ruth in baseball, and Dale Earnhardt in nascar.

There is no question or debate about it, Michael Jordan is the best basketball player ever. Lebron may be one day, but he has not proven anything until he has all the rings Jordan has. Just check out some of Jordan's career highlights and videos: http://www.fanpop.com/spots/michael-jordan
