I've held the hand of those about to die. I have removed the grip of death from those in deaths grasp. I have gone sleepless so others may sleep in peace. I have nearly frozen so others might be warmed. I have suffered thirst so others might drink and hunger so others might eat. I have have touched death myself only to be saved by another. I have seen the most terrible things and the ultimate beauty all in a single day. My soul has been tried but I am at peace.

My brother and I spent every summer at my grandparents' house and great-grandparents' farm. They were all dirt poor and we worked to help them. We learned of the hardships they had faced and saw how their family cohesiveness and senses of humor had worked to help them weather extreme adversities.
My parents were both only kids. They worked hard and became very well off financially. (Republicans too unfortunately.) They gave my brother and I every opportunity we wanted.
The grounding and values from my grandparents and the opportunities from my parents helped me to become a compassionate and successful person. And a democrat by the way!!!
And you Rob? Fair is fair. How did it come to pass that you turned out to be such a decent guy who stays on focus with the right questions and answers and avoid the meanness that characterizes so many others on here? (Myself included sometimes)

well im guessing you asked this question to get specifics. I think the most dramatic changes happened to me towards the end of high school when I lost someone important to me but not through death bu through my own fault which I had to deal with. I was stripped bare of who I was and had to figure out who I was which I did through religion, drug, alcohol, reading, workaholicing, eating. all the usual ways people deal with loss and here I am today living and learning.

I bought diesel fuel for my tractor today at $3.09 per gallon and it made me decide that I will no longer vote for a Republican! Being an Independent is the American way!
