How do I reach the command prompt without signing in to the computer? My Windows 2000 isn't starting and it tells me to do a CHKDSK /F but it isn't starting, how do i get to the command prompt?

Goto Start>Run then type cmd

Press F8 as you computer begins to boot and select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Check out this site for more help:

try rebooting in safe mode. Turn off the computer, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Start tapping F8 when your computer starts displaying stuff. select the run windows in safe mode option. from there you should be able to run chkdsk from the command line.

edit: the post above says you can get to the command line right after hitting f8.

You can also press F4 or F8 (depends on BIOS) while the PC starts up, and you will get a Start up Menu... From here, you can choose to do to the command prompt. Make sure you keep pressing F4 as soon as the power is on to the PC so you won't miss it!

Use the Retail or OEM Win2k Cd to boot. then from the recovery console type the following : "chkdsk C: /f" with out the quotes and assuming "C" is the Drive you are having problems with.

Hmm the way I do this is to use a boot disk or floppy and boot up in DOS. From that point you can run chkdsk

use a boot disk, then set bios to boot to floppy, the at the A:/ prompt, type it in. It's wanting you to check the format of the disk to check it's integrity.......Good Luck

use windows installation media,(bootable cdrom) set ur bios to boot from cdrom, during installation setup instead of new installation choose repair it will give you command prompt.
