I went thru my impressionable junior high (middle school) and high school years in the 1980s, so I think the music of this decade will forever be imprinted in my mind AND my heart. :) I'm also happy to learn that some people who weren't even born until the 80s or even later, are "rediscovering" the music and are liking it!!
Just for fun, I'd like to know your favorite 80s bands. In the spirit of the decade, please don't list more than 8. Also, please tell me your age, if you don't mind me asking -- I'm curious if you grew up with the music, or if you got introduced to it later. (I'm 34).
You don't have to put yours in preference order, unless you want to. Mine are in alphabetical order, because it'd be too hard otherwise! :) It was hard enough narrowing it down to just 8!
Big Country
Depeche Mode
Duran Duran
The Fixx
New Order
The Police
Simple Minds
U2

I went to High School in the '60s and I found the '80s to be a musical renaissance after the musical desert of the ‘70s. For me the ‘80s picked up where the ‘60s left off. Then the ‘90s were even better. However the ‘80s were still fantastic and since our focus in this answer column is the ‘80s here are some of my favorite bands of the 80's though not necessarily my top 8 (except I believe The Cure would have to be my favorite for that decade):
The Cure
The Psychedelic Furs
Peter Schilling
Siouxie & the Banshees
Xymox
INXS
R.E.M.
Echo & the Bunnymen
Some that I had written down (and I could have written down hundreds if you had put no limit on these) and deleted from the above 8 are:
The Go-Gos
Fad Gadget
Alphaville
Vicious Pink
The B-52's

There is one very under-loved band which was so great - Oingo Boingo. The frontman for the band, Danny Elfman, has gone on to be an award winning musical score composer for many movies you have seen on the big screen and on television - the Simpsons, Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the NIghtmare Before Christmas, etc.
I saw them many times and they were by far the best .

Tokio inn is my all time well-known band! i appreciate all of their songs or perhaps the German ones, yet, my well-known one is "waiting, Set, bypass!" yet, inspite of this, I also like the band All Time Low ... and my well-known song by technique of them is "Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If i do not)" Very not person-friendly selection, yet I nevertheless imagine Tokio inn dominates. =) large call!
