2 ways to do this. First, hold down the shift key when pc is booting up. that will disable all software from auto starting on bootup. However the better was is this, goto start--> Run and type in msconfig. This will bring up your System Configuration Utility. Click on the startup tab and uncheck anything you dont want to run automatically on startup.

if u r using windows xp or latter OS there is a utility in system32 folder called msconfig.exe, to use it , start menu-> run in the dialog box that appears type msconfig and the there is a startup tab pan you can use it to stop the startups that u dont want to run. after unchecking the checkboxes just close the utility, it will prompt for restart, but there is no need to do immediate restart. On next reboot the start up wont run but a system shows a dialog box saying it has run the system config utility. use the checkbox to "not to show next time" so this dialog will not be displayed any further. if u are using windows 2000 you can copy this executable from windows xp distribution media ( or internet) and use it. its a standalone executable and works fine with windows 2000.

There are several method to kill start up applications.
1. Set the applications preference by going to the settings of the relevant application.
1. Remove the links and files in Windows startup folder. Usually it is located in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
2. Type “msconfig” in Start -> Run dialog box and locate the Startup Tab. Remove the thick mark from the check boxes so they will not run next time.
3. Go to Run dialog box and type “regedit” (No quotes) and then locate the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Then delete the values you find in the right side panel. CAUTION – Unless you are an experienced user, DO NOT attempt this method.

check out a program called WinPatrol. I have tried a few of these type of programs and this is the best I have tried so far.

Yes you can use windows task manager but I have found that you can't always "stop" processes. Some companies are writing programs that can get around windows task manager via various means. With WinPatrol, I found that I could stop processes that I couldn't with WTM. WinPatrol also gave me control over what got added to the start menu whenever I install new programs.

Yes, it costs money but it's been worth it.

Run 'cmd'

then at the DOS prompt, type 'msconfig' or 'mscfg' depending on Windows version

you will see a listing of all all the processes set to start when you boot

uncheck the ones you don't want (good luck on knowing which is which)

Download and install Microsoft Windows Defender (type "download windows defender" in google. From the options tab (Windows defender) you can remove the programs you don't want from the list.

This is better than the MSConfig option because it lists the programs with their icons. You have to figure out what each one is in MSConfig.

Good Luck

it might take awhile but go to each application that starts up automatically and you should be able to find a setting that asks "do you want this to start up whenever windows starts up?" click no
