Does it matter? He's really funny and witty. He's poked fun at both sides of the political spectrum.

The character that Stephen Colbert plays on his show is a conservative, but it is a parody; it is meant to make fun of conservative ideas. He clearly disagrees with the Republican position on the war, social values, civil liberties, and the economy, and so he is a liberal.

Stephen Colbert, the TV personality, is a very strict conservative.

Stephen Colbert, the real man, is not a conservative but he plays one on TV.

"60 Minutes" aired a profile of Stephen Colbert this past Sunday. Very interesting. When he was 10, his Dad and brother died in an airliner crash. He saw life differently after that tragedy. He focused on trying to make his Mom laugh and not to take life seriously. He has used his humor to poke fun at those that take themselves seriously. He has a dry wit that raises sarcasm to a higher level. He is neither conservative nor liberal and uses his humor make fun at those who label themselves. It is not that important.

I'm pretty sure he's a liberal. He gave a pretty harsh roast of Bush at the 2006 White House Correspondent's Dinner this year that made everyone feel uncomfortable: http://www.fanpop.com/spots/the-colbert-report/links/5204

Only a liberal who despised Bush could be this harsh!

I don't think he's either. The point of his show is to make fun of everything of political importance. He'd have to be somewhere in the middle to do that. Still, I do think that he leans towards the conservative side of the middle. I can't picture him being overly supportive of gay rights, the pro-choice movement, and other liberal pursuits.
