I understand its free information, but I feel about weird about it (I've only done it a couple times). What do you think, is it spying?

No, it can actually be quite fun, especially if they have common names. Most of what's on the Internet about relatively unknown people is a record of their achievements (awards, graduation) or (rarely) of their criminal record.

If you're lucky, your friend has a name that is fairly common. I once googled a friend's name and found someone with the same name who was an astronomy professor at Yale.

Not really. If something is on the internet about someone, they usually know about it already and are okay with it. If something is posted without permission, THAT's an invasion of privacy.

I must admit, I have done that before. Once with a friend I thought might have stolen my identitiy and another time to find my best friend from high school. If your intentions are not borderline stalker, I don't see why you should not google whoever you want.

No, but it borders on taking advantage of their naivety for leaving a traceable trail of their real names on Google.

no. I don't care if people google me. anything they'd find would be stuff I've knowingly left for public view.

No, I do it now and then with people I meet. It just tells you the public stuff -- or lack thereof -- about them.
