Even if that person was no longer yours but had died from drugs/lifestyle choices. Why wasn't I a better influence when I had the chance? Would that have made a difference ultimately?

There is nothing you can do - just think about it when it surfaces in your mind - and then move on.

It isn't your fault or your decision when someone chooses to do drugs. We have free will but that applies only to ourselves. What we need to do is make the best decisions for ourselves. Drugs and bad lifestyles are dealbreakers in a relationship. One has no right to drag the other down in to a life of such despair.

We as humans tend to believe that if we do this or that, then we can save others from themselves, but in truth some people are/will destroy themselves no matter what. If you had all the answers then you wouldn't need to be here. So no sense in kicking yourself in any fashion some people will still climb into the lions pit, or put their hands in an electrical socket knowing that their behavior will hurt them or their just plain dumb if you want more proof go to darwinawards.com and look at the stupid things people do there, trust me you won't believe it.

Just move on with your life and not worry about it. You can't change the past, however the future is whatever you want to make of it

Are you grieving his/her death or the death of the relationship? After your'e 18 you make your own choice and no one can TELL you what to do, you wouldn't listen and you wouldn't want anyone trying to tell You what to do so live and let live and let the dead bury the dead

Shift the perception, everytime it comes up, tell your Self this:
It was all for my best and highest good.
You know why?
Because it is.
If you choose it to be.
