Yes, it is OK. That is where most people start. Internships aren't only about the work you do - it's about the relationships you make and the environment you are exposed to. Good interns can still find ways to stand out and prove themselves worthy of more advanced assignments.

It's called 'paying your dues'. My nephew was chosen as an intern to work for CBS Radio broadcasting every NY Yankee home game last year. CBS picked 3 interns out of 1,000 applicants.
Not only did he have to travel to Yankee Stadium 80+ times, he also had to pay his own parking and meals (no freebees). Some of his duties included fetching hot dogs for the on air talent and other menial tasks; but he also was allowed to write the end of game recaps that the broadcasters used after a while. Plus he got to meet most of the players and participate in on field activites pre and post game.
Bottom line, he has been promised a job with CBS Radio upon graduation.

WHAT do they think an internship is?? They haven't earned anything yet, they should be overjoyed to receive an internship.
That is called starting at the bottom and learning what the company is all about. If they are good little interns, some day they might get their own intern to make copies and fetch coffee.

I don't think it is right to make someone subserviant unless the tasks relate directly to the job they will do someday. EG a student might be asked to file things, gas up a vehicle used for work-related travel because that is part of making a place run...but coffee?? Maybe if others do it regularly too and the student drinks it...

Might as well get used to it; you still have to do those things after actually get an actual job in the field...lowest person on the totem pole always has to do the grunt work to free up time for those higher up to do more important productive work.
Do it and work your way up the totem pole and eventually there will be others under you to fetch your coffee and make your photocopies to free you up to do more important work.

I've been working for thirty years and I make coffee and photocopies. Does my engineering degree from a great school and years of experience exempt me from refilling the coffee pot I drink from?

When I did my internship, it was not fun... I was the gofer boy.
Hey boy, go for this, go for that. I did everything from mailings to data entry... but, the end result was that I learned alot about the culture and inner workings of my profession. That internship put me on course to be very successful.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Most jobs that have an internship = you're gonna WORK your way to the top.
I mean c'mon. No one starts at the top unless they're sleeping with the boss or related to the boss. Pay your dues and one day you will have your own intern.

Menial jobs make the world go round.
Be thankful you don't have to make a career out of it.
