Shoujo is a term that is used to refer to anime/manga that are aimed at a female audience. 'shoujo' translates into japanese as the kanji, 少女... literally meaning 'girl'. Most shoujo manga depict a female protagonist usually with big eyes and most involve some kind of romance. It is similar to the common American 'chick flick'. For example, animes like sailormoon is considered to be a shoujo anime. It is important to note that although the anime/manga is aimed at girls, it is not limited to girls.
The opposite of shoujo is shounen (which is anime/manga aimed at male audiences)
