Why are they called the New York Giants?

There players don't look any bigger than the players on any of the other teams.

Because 'Shortstops' was already taken.

Probably because when they were founded, the New York Giants were a baseball team (now the San Francisco Giants), and the owner wanted to connect his team to theirs through naming. They still call themselves the New York Football Giants when you call the team's operator.
