Here's something that's pretty ugly....

It's what eventually turns into a graceful, magical dragonfly. Can you see a connection between these 2 things and a lot of things in your life? I sure can. That's why I love dragonflies.

Your art teacher's task is not only for you to bring something ugly but to first decide what you find ugly. There could be a whole range of things. But it will depend on what you think and how deeply you allow yourself to think. for instance someone might suggest 'garbage' because they find it dirty or unattractive to look at, or you could look further and perhaps see that within the garbage there are signs of waste and destruction.
Maybe there is an old photo of yourself which is not actually ugly but you find it ugly because you dislike certain aspects of it, like what you wore that day or the surroundings. The teacher will probably get you all to look at what you found and be prepared to see a wide range of objects or ideas, because everyone has different tastes.
Think about when you see a couple in the street and someone says 'what does she see in him' or 'how does someone who looks like that find a partner' (not nice comments lol) those individuals might believe their partners are the most beautiful things in the world.
most teachers assignments are to open our eyes and make us learn something. So you might have to ask yourself : )

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. So is ugly. What do YOU think is ugly? Some food for thought: war, poverty, floods. If you pick something that you find ugly, your writing will flow. The best writers use their personal experience as the basis for what they have to say. Perhaps it will help if you think of someone sitting next to you and you want to tell them about something you find ugly. Just start writing like you were talking. You can go back and revise it after you have it on paper. Good luck.

How about: A rotten peach? A bad grade on a test? A messy room? Bikinis? Hairless cats? Utah poof haristyles? Purple hair? A book full of critical essays? Those fish that live deep in the ocean? Tomatoe horn worms? Spedos? Word problems? The town drunk?
Hopefully this helps. ;-)

I would go to the politics section of several papers, and cut out the photos of the politicians and the articles related to them. I can't think of anything more ugly than watching self-important people pretending to be concerned about others when in fact they're often concerned more with holding onto their political positions.
