The Spectacled Bear, which is also called the Andean Bear, is indeed the only bear found in South America. It is found in the mountains of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. It is primarily herbivorous - the preferred foods are fruits and Bromeliads. It does not eat cattle. It is an endangered species. Another name for it is "ucumari".

The only bear in Peru - in fact, all of South America - is the Spectacled Bear. They're quite rare, and while they do eat rodents they're too small to bring down cattle.

That surprises me. I thought the largest predator there was the puma, exluding of course an anaconda.
