Wow!! a hard question, but I'll do my best......
as I see it, God created Adam and AEve with free wills, as He has all of mankind, (otherwise we'd just be robots), He created a wonderful world full of everything they could possibly want, and only had one demand, thay they did not eat of the fruit.
They - naturally - zeroed in on the one thing amongst everything they did have, that they could'nt have, and disobeyed God's command, thereby excersising ther free will.
The tree and fruit were'nt evil, it was that in disobeying, they had already learned about evil, but were'nt aware of it till the fruit had actually been tasted.
He didn't want them to know of evil, because He knew what it would do to them, and the generations to follow..........
God already knew what they were going to do, but He wanted them to love Him of their own free choice, not because they had to........
I'm sorry, I'm no theologian, so I find it hard to put into words what I feel, without rabbiting on and on.......
All I do know, is that all the evils in the world from then on, are not of God's making, they are of mans, and it grieves God terribly to see what we are doing.
However He will not take our free will away from us, and as we all deserve eternal damnation for the sin we commit, He loved us too much to have that happen, thus he sent Jesus, to pay the price of that sin, and gave us the gift of forgiveness. Its freely offered, without any strings, other than that we accept it, and try our very best to live the sort of life He wants us to have.
The amazing thing is that He offers the same love and forgiveness to the Osama Bin Ladens of this world too. The small sins we commit are just as bad to God as the atrocities commited by the most evil......but the forgiveness is the same......
Its there for the taking, if we are sincere about it.

No you have it wrong it was the tree of all knowlege. God did not want the knowledge because we (humans) might think we were so smart that we didn't need god anymore. The story of the tower of bable is a good example of this. If we had stayed dumb we would be more obident. Just like the dog that is content to sit by your feet.

It was because they ate of that tree... It was because they disobeyed him...Note Die...to be dead in the body but not Immediately but in the spirit as well. Adam went on to live some 900 years but he did die. God never intended man to die. Thus that is why he sent his son so we may live forever.
(Gen 2:17) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Because God is a rich, fat, petty, tyrant king in the sky, who needs lot of praise and animal sacrifice (but just for a few centuries) and at one point even decided to commit suicide to make himself feel better about dooming most of his creation to annihilation since he didn't bother to make them "perfect" and he cannot stand to be around things that are not also "perfect".

If you go by the premise that MAN invented the notion of "God" and you follow-up with the notion in Genesis that the tree of knowledge contained fruit that was prohibited because it contained knowledge that man would use to break the chains of ignorance and subjugation... follow this through to the next logical conclusion, "God" wanted to keep Man ignorant, obedient,sub-servient, easily to be herded like sheep, to repeat things (religious dogmas, practices, prayers, traditions supposedly simbolic of some heavenly notion) and told to accept and believe without asking for proof... (faith is belief without proof)...
FEAR is a great motivator of man... it causes Man to live in community for mutual protection, to use fire to light their caves or dwellings (today we light light our homes, streets, buildings and streets)... we still fear darkness, the unknown...
We are told that we cannot look at God and we cannot know His intentions (" for He works in mysterious ways...") in an effort to prevent us from finding proofs we need to show that He was invented... lest a few groups of people lose their positions of favor, luxury, comfort and wealth!
Light is good; darkness is bad... that's what we're taught. But Man with knowledge quickly learns that there is "nothing to fear but fear itself." There was darkness, man was fearful of the unknown, so he learned to make and use fire for protection and light after gaining knowledge, after being "cast out of the Eden, (the supposed) Paradise."
MAN invented God and not the other way around... it is the fear that is instilled when they hear thunder to bend Man and prevent him from having aspirations to elevate himself since he may want to reach the same station in life as those benefitting by his labor and sacrifices... the religious leaders and the monarchy (royal bloodline from the heavens, from "gods"... )... religion was invented by man, plain and simple, to subjugate others! Today, in countries where governments have replaced the monarchy, religious leaders are still in league with government leaders... do you still wonder why?

So apparently we're just supposed to be obedient and ignorant?
Doesn't sound like the kind of god I consider...
Why would he need us obedient if he were all-powerful?
