Wow what the hell... I listen to rap. I think some people just don't get into it. Don't get mad at people's opinions. I doubt you listen to everything .... just let it be. People can have their opinions just like you have yours. Good luck with the music.

I AM A MUSICIAN... I have been for over 25 years. I specialize in rhythm instruments....drums, percussion, bass. I am far from ignorant when it comes to music. That being said, PLEASE don't lump rap and R&B together! I have heard people define rap as 'the new blues'... BS! Rhythm and Blues has many components rap does not...melody, structure, lyrical definition and a cohesive message.

Let's look at rap in its current form: Electronic beats, sampled music...very few rappers out there working with live bands behind them. Lyrics that in many cases are not capable of being understood unless you are hearing whatever the current street slang is on a daily basis. I personally don't know half the time what is being said, and I'm FROM the damn hood! Maybe rap would appeal to more folks if they used a language the average person could actually understand.

I know its been said here before, but there are a number of themes that run all through rap. I challenge you to find one rap album that doesn't have references to drugs, guns, female anatomy, derogatory words or ideas about women, fancy cars, diamonds or rims.Nowadays it would be hard. This is pretty much the 'rappers survival kit' for when they get stuck... okay, lets whip out the '*** is a masterpiece' line Canibus used, and then we'll talk about ho's in da backseat of my hoopdie cuz I gotz no fly azz whip wit da spinnaz, but I gotz my bling I rented at Rent-A-Center back at da crib, so don't be illin' *****

See what I'm saying? How many rap songs does that sound like? A lot of them. And I haven't 'busted a cap' or 'popped a busta' yet!

As for the folks who say its about getting out of the ghetto, how about sending a POSITIVE message to those still stuck there? Life is not all about fancy cars, drugs and the opposite sex, and if you think it is, no wonder you're depressed. I'd be depressed too if my music of choice saw me as an object, ladies. How can you see a positive message in all this bi*ches and ho's crap? Baby mama...not only do you not have a name, you have no meaning other than a womb? How is that snapping a girl out of her depression?

I've had my say, so I'll end by saying this: In many cases it is NOT ignorance when someone dislikes rap, it's intelligence.

When you constantly sample other artists music and set it to lyrics that only seems to foster anti-social behavior. Yes, it's crap.
I have heard some rap, that is original, carries a good tune but was destroyed when the "artist" starts talking (not singing) about "poppin caps" in some hood.

When rap first came on the scene in the early '80 it was fresh and original. Fast forward to today, every rap song has basically the same beat. Video's are even worse. Every rap song has the same basic four items. Gaudy jewelry, Flashy Cars, Women standing around shaking butts and a party scene around every corner.

Oh I forgot to mention grillz, people wasting money, on jewelry that basically serves no purpose in real life but wasting money. Just think how many kids out there turning to a life of crime, stealing, dealing drugs, selling their souls, so they can look like Paul Wahl and have all those babes and cool cars he has. Rap has brought us the hip-hop culture and today it still continues to rot brains by glamorizing ghetto behavior.

Rap may have roots in R&B, but don't confuse an art form that has deep roots in our culture with a modern phenon that has degraded from a fresh concept to a form that seems to only foster a growing gap in our society. It takes a real artist to make music. It takes a lazy person to convert other artists music, their time and effort and yes their soul into a 4 or 5 minute song full of repetition of the best parts of a song that has been heard before and capitolize on their efforts.

People say that rap and country are crap for 3 reasons and the reasons are exactly the same:

#1 People are racist! (and we all know this as sad as it is) It is my guess that 98% of people that call country or rap "crap" do so based on race and nothing else.

#2 People are ignorant! I assume 1% of people that hate rap or country hate it because someone told them it isn't any good and they have never examined either genre for themselves.

#3 Finally, and I am probably giving these people too much credit, there are probably 1% of music fans that just can't get with rap or country. I don't understand it. I don't know why? It is a mystery to me, but I have to assume that it exists.

Music, to me, is the greatest thing we have in our culture. I love it all. I don't see why someone can't appreciate 50, but also appreciate Merle Haggard as well. Heck, in my changer in my vehicle, right now, I have a 50 CD, a George Jones CD, a Gun's 'n Roses CD, an Allman Brother's CD and a Widespread Panic CD. I love it all!

I, too, get tired and upset when people call rap crap. However, I get just as tired of people calling country crap.

Period, point blank...and I don't want to ruffle feathers...Intelligent people that understand music would never make either statement.

Personally, I don't like rap. I can't hear the lyrics, and when I can, it sounds like they are talking about materialism. Who cares about gold teeth, fancy cars and flashy spinning rims? If they're not talking about that, they're talking about sex or some gangster issue.

What I don't like about rap the most though is the way it sounds. It's very lacking when it comes to notes and harmony. It's all about a repeating rhythm and some guy who talks in a droning voice over the music. It just doesn't sound good to me.

As for R&B, I like the old stuff but not the new stuff. After Mariah Carey hit the scene, it all went to crap. I can't get into that style of over vocalizing everything. Also the arrangement and production of the music is very annoying to my ears. Old time R&B was way better. I love the song "You Really Got A Hold On Me."

I love rock/pop the most and I like some folk. country, and bluegrass. I'm a young white male from Appalachia (a region defined by the Appalachian mountains in the eastern United States.) Is it cooincidence that I like what I do? Probably not. We're all products of our environment.

I am so tired of these Broke DOwn rappers and R&B singers exploiting the HOOD that I dont know what to do! I wish they would quit it! All they seem to do is pretend like they are so rich and high and mighty when we all know that those fools are living highly of an advance which doesnt belong to them. And then for the fools to fight with one other the whole time making such a small amount of the money which the market has to offer.... You never see TOMMY MOTTOLA and CLive Davis outside shooting one another in the behinds! It's so dumb... All they talk about is shooting n i g g a s, and abusing women and selling dope. When it's people in the Hood who really live that! We live that everyday!!!!! and all they make a spectacle of like.... wE like living in the hood. For the record I HATE the HOOD!!!!!!!!!!! iT'S has nothing to offer and to all the folks out there who try to pretend to be hard because of rap.Thank God that you dont really have to live this life!!!!

For starters, rap is something else than music. It has no tune to it, and is not even much like rhythm. Many object to it for the nasty, violent, and immoral lyrics. I like rap when I can understand what is being said, and when it is not bad language, but I never consider it music because of the lack of a melody. It is an art form that does not have a true classification.
This is just my opinion, so do not be mad at me. Be mad at my opinion. If I like something, I do not care what anybody else says about it. Don't be so sensitive.

Because what people know of rap and r&b are lamers that just take great old hits, add a few lame beats and make millions off them. Half the time I hear rap on the radio or something its something I already knew that was "rapetized".

Because famous rap stars have like no talent. They dont sing, they talk. They dont play instruments, they mix. They dont write great songs, they talk about sex, money and drugs. They all have a shitty gangster image that pretty much only rebel teens like.

Maybe there is some good rap or r&b. Thanks to MTV (and others as well) though we will never know because from the sample we get we dont want to hear any more rap songs ever again.

It's because the typical rap song today talks about women, money and gangsterism. I personally like rap and r&b. But I do agree that a lot of the music being put out is not like it used to be. The typical song you hear on the radio is not really about anything and that is what people who do not listen to rap and r&b with a dedication hear. That is how they base their opinions usually. It's a stereotype that people put on rap and r&b just like when they say it's black music and find it weird when a white guy or and asian guy raps.

They think it's crap because they don't understand it. Plus, they are probably racist. Rap is a newer form of music so not everyone is going to like it, understand it, or even want to understand it. My parents don't like rap but they're 50 years old. I think once our generation grows old, rap will be more acceptable because we (and our children) have all grown up listening to it. It depends on where you live too. I highly doubt there are many rap-lovers in the state of Utah, but in many large cities everyone listens to rap. And who cares if the subjects rappers talk about aren't very classy? Rap music is fun, has a good beat, and is great to dance to! I love rap music!

Because some of us have the good sense to realize that rap IS crap. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and by you putting a question like this out there, you should expect to get some negative answers. I absolutely hate rap. It is NOT music. It is someone talking or yelling to the beat of accoustic instruments.
