Bearded dragons are gray, brown, reddish-brown or bright orange, with prominent spines along their sides and large triangle-shaped heads. Forming a sort of shield around the snout and under the chin is a spiny jaw pouch which, when swollen, looks like a beard and makes any predator think twice before attacking. The dark beards on mature males become black during courtship and breeding. They can grow up to two feet long, including the tail. Males are larger than females. They need at least five feet of space to run, branches to climb, a hot basking area that reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit and a quiet area to retreat and hide. They are omnivores that will eat green salad, fruits, flowers, insects such as crickets or mealworms and small vertebrates. Adults can eat small pre-killed mice.
A bulky body and the habit of basking allows them to store heat, making it possible to operate at lower temperatures than other lizards. They can also survive higher temperatures for several hours, since they can regulate body temperature by evaporation. When intimidated, they flatten their bodies and stand erect with mouth gaping. The light-colored mouth lining, spines bordering the lower jaw and puffed-out blackish beard give a formidable appearance. Their ability to change shades of color, from light to dark, helps them to regulate body temperature. Color changes can depend on emotional state, and may be used for concealment. When injured, sick or dying, the back becomes black and the legs pale yellow.

usually it takes 2 yrs for them to reach their full length. they will be around 2 ft when they are full grown, that's if their tail is still in tact, meaning they didn't have tail bitten off before you got him.
