A fence for what? In Missouri the definition of a "legal fence" is 4' high with posts a minimum of 12' apart.

depends on the type of fence, if chain link there is a handy spacing formula in the free guide at the hardware store. Barb wire or page fence 16 ft is normal.

The length of your stiles. If you've got a wire fence (chain link, barbed wire, etc), then you can be flexible. 4 to 8 feet should work. Barbed wire probably closer to 8 feet, chain link - 6 feet. A fence that someone might try climbing, then might want to consider 4.

Depends on your terrain, what you are making the fence with, and why you are making the fence?

I have seen many variations depending on private yard, pasture, cattle pasture, wheat field, swimming pool, etc.
