Stay away from both
both brands are crap, bad tech support, short standard warranties
Bought a Toshiba Satellite: after the third month of use the USB ports went bad (become loose on MoBo) from usage, about 6 months HD went bad, 9 months keyboard and mobo starting going. All fixed no charge under 12 month standard warranty. Purchased the extended warranty knowing something else would probally go. Now the plastic casing around the screen is starting to split at the seams. cheap glue, cheap case design, cheap plastic. What's next, the battery exploding like a Dell?

I thought Toshiba's Satellites were good. I had an HP laptop and had issues with it immediately. I thought I really scored on it, because it was really nice, until it started acting whacky the first week. I got mine at Circuit City and they were un-willing to do anything but exchange it. I just wanted them to install a different drive, not change out the whole thing. I'll never get another one from CC. Best Buy is the best place for me, they're just too far. I have a Compaq (HP bought them out) now and I've had issues with it, but I've managed to get them straightened out. I've had this one for over a year and it's still kickin'. Mustn't be too bad. HP owns 'em. One thing I can tell you, though, and that's every single HP All in One printer I've ever had has screwed up on me. HP's printers; all-in-ones especially, suck eggs. I've never had one printer (All in One) that didn't f**k up on me. Not one of them is worth a s**t. If you want to get scr**ed, get HP. As far as their laptops, I go by all their products and figure if they suck in one area, who's to say they're any good in another? It's your decision.

Yea I would have to stick with HP. They are actually building them a whole lot better and usually the errors I deal with with those kinds of laptops are user errors. My sis got one and she loves it. Personally I have acer, and I will stick with the less name brands for laptops and just upgrade to better parts. Anyhow, stick with HP, tech support is decent too.

Toshiba's got real problems with reliability. Wouldn't buy one with someone else's money. Dell probably best. IBM next and HP third. All three good though.

HP, they have a 24/7 live chat thing to fix your problems. They will help you fix your problems even if your warranty is up.

toshiba is not worth buying
HP is pretty good
but I have one big suggestion...
APPLE
macs almost never crash (apple still has a section on their site for computers made in the 1980s) and are very reliable
if you need to run windows, they do that alongside the awesome mac os x
