lets see. A nano second is about 1 meter. so 1 second is 10^^9 meters. A year is 365 days X 24 hours X 60 minuets X 60 seconds = 3.1536 X 10^^7 x 10^^9 = about 3 X 10^^16 meters

A light year is the distance light travels in 1 earth year, i.e, 3 exp 8 m/s * 60 s/min *60 min/hr * 24 hrs/day * 365 days/year * 1 year = about 9.46 exp 15 (9.46*10^14) meters long.

A light-year is defined as the distance that light will travel in a year. If the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second (300,000 km per second), then calculate the distance that light will travel in one year.

186,000 mi/sec x 60 sec/min x 60 min/hr x 24 hr/day x 365 days/yr

The distance that a beam of light can travel within a year.

ex- When you turn on a flashlight, a beam of light travels from the end of the flashlight to the nearest obstruction (ex-a wall). If there was no obstruction, and the light continued to travel in that direction- how far it would travel in a year would be considered a light year.
