Im assuming that Billy Jo wrote it. Does anyone know what it means to him.
I have my own meaning to the song, and its very close to my heart. I just wonder if it has that effect for others too, including its maker.

Contrary to the video's subject, this song is about Billie Joe's father who died on September 1st, 1982. After the funeral, he locked himself in his room and cried "Wake me up when September ends". That's where the title came from

That song is about Billie Jo's dad dying while Billy's mother was pregnant with him. His dad was called off to war and he was killed in combat... Didn't anybody watch the video?
That was a flashback of Billy's real life.

Its 9/11 because in the music video they show the war in Iraq. I believe it means to him is to wake him up when September end to end the pain of what has happen during those dreadful days of September. Including the death of his father.
