The scientific study of the medical benefits of using aromatherapy is in its infancy, starting in the late 1990's. I have not seen any questionnaires regarding its correlation with the sleeping patterns of elderly patients.

While it is true that many of us lose our olfactory sense as we age, there is evidence that aromatherapy can produce a sedative effect through pharmacological interaction. In this event, olfaction would not be necessary to the sedative effect of aromatherapy for this age group.

I've ministered to several people in their later years. Aromatherapy is a wonderful, non-invasive therapy for the senior generation. In fact, it's been my experience that they respond better to essential oils than prescription medicines for pain relief, gastrointestinal issues, and infections. I sense that it's due to the decreased metabolism of the elderly. Essential oils do not metabolize the same way meds do and they go straight into the body.

I suggest mixing a few drops of lavender, geranium, and bergamot essential oils with a non-scented massage oil and use as a foot massage before bedtime. Not only will the foot rub relax them, but the essential oils will continue to work long after you're done!
