People typically cope with emotions by acting externally on the world (problem-focused coping), or acting internally to change their beliefs or attention (emotion-focused coping).

In inter-personal conflicts, if a person looks to make amends (external action), this is a form of problem-solving coping; while accepting responsibility or shifting responsibility (internal actions) are forms of emotion-focused coping.

Isn't it about addressing the emotions a person is going through in relation to a life event? You identify the emotions, and either accept and rationalise them or reject them.
