That really depends on your waistline. If you are an obese, then you will have to do some cardio exercise to burn those fats while doing sit-ups.
Mostly,sit-ups are just for toning your stomach muscles.Straining yourself on doing hundreds of sit-ups are pointless.
There are basically 2 main parts of your stomach muscles to work with.

The upper abs - Hold your hands behind your ears, and sit up fully before going down again.
The lower abs - Same posture, but do not sit up fully.Sit up till about 30degree angle and go down.

To minimise on injury, lower your body slowly.
To maximise result,do not give up when you feel the pain.
For beginner,do 40 sit-ups every morning and night each. Increase by 10 every month.

You should have at least 4-packs by the end of 3 months if your body condition is good.

I found for me doing sit ups had no effect at all on my abs. Running and swimming laps actually helped improve the tone and muscularity. All sit ups do for me is hurt my lower back and make my stomach muscles sore if I do a lot of them. But, alas they never showed real results. I swim up to 50 laps a day (all strokes) and walk a few blocks around the neighborhood. Also, if you have fat around your middle it will be harder to develop a 6 pack. You have to get rid of the fat first-try cardio as well! Good luck!

firstly.. and most important..

NEVER DO SIT-UPS.. dont waste your precious back.. sit-ups should only be used in physical training exams or tests..

Crunches, Leg-Raises and a combination of both would be better, given you do it correctly...

I myself do reps of 100 of each now, with rest of about 2 mins in between and I do a total of 15-20 reps a day?

and each rep consists of the 3 kinds of exercise...

SO here's how it goes..

1. Crunches
2. Leg-Raises
3. Both
4. Rest

so do this above ^^^^ sequence for 15 - 20 times a day...
but of course if you havent really started doing it.. I advise a minimum if 20-30 reps of each first.. and slowly work your way up...
