Do you think that society has become more cruel, judgmental, and callous vs. 20 years ago? What's your take on why people seem so quick to jump all over other's without taking into consideration where they have come from, accomplished, survived etc.?

This question stems from; noticing when people answer certain questions ie. obesisty they feel the need to insult and say that obese people are disgusting etc. This applies to hate crimes regarding race, disabilities, sexual preference etc.

I think that these days we are less caring of others and more self centered as a society. 50 years ago people were more likely to help each other, but now it is a rare sight to see some one do for another and not expect something in return for their efforts. I think it's really sad that more and more our focus is all on the physical appearance and not on character of a person. So in short, I definitely agree with you.

I believe that people act and answer that way because they are shallow, self obsessed and insecure. They feel compelled to try and make others feel as low as they do. Also, some people simply do not care about the struggles of others. If it doesn't fit into their own small, square reality, then it either doesn't exist or it doesn't matter. Some people may disagree with me or get offended, but the state of humanity is at an all time low. No one has the time to give a damn about how others feel. Those that can find the time simply refuse. Call me cynical, but though I have hope, I honestly do not believe that the coming generations will do much for the improvement of humanity.

I believe much of the intolerance and cruelty you mention stems from people's intolerance of differences. Back in say the 60's, blacks were restricted from doing many things and called names. American Indians were not allowed to attend "white schools" until the early 1970's. Intolerance in this country has been permitted for so long and even encouraged by our government that it has become a way of life. In my opinion, if the government really supported the Constitution, all that kind of crap would be illegal.

yes. i think people are much more rude than they used to be. i think it has to do with the exploitation of the "freedom of speech" ammendment, and the fact that americans are so spoiled with getting whatever they want. but, i will have to say i'd rather have someone insult me and get away with it, as opposed to not being able to say anything at all, as in some third world countries...boy, wouldn't it be something if we started to stone people or cut off their hands for speaking their minds! hmm...maybe that would teach people to be more courteous in america...

Now vs. 1986? I really don't think the world was any less cruel in 1986. If anything, people have only redirected their hatred and cruelty.

More cruel today -- no. More idiotic? Sure.
If anything, things have become more acceptable, even when they actually shouldn't. I think people have lost their common sense when it comes to things and almost being too accepting in certain behaviours and actions.

people are more likely to say what they think now then in the "good old days" when people thought all sorts of nasty things, and then pretended to be nice.
personally, I prefer the the straight-up approach to a society of hypocritical nice guys.
