The little bumpy ridges that run up and down a celery stalk are what I am talking about.

I know everyone is saying they are called ribs but according to the encyclopedia this is another term for the actual stalk. My daughter needs to know as extra credit on her homework.

The xylem is what carrys water and stored food upward from the roots to the leaves of a plant.You can test this with celery to see this happen. Place a cut piece of celery in water in which you added red food coloring, watch as the red water travels up the xylem and thus turns the "ribs" red.
