There was a little boy. He went to the local diner for an ice cream sundae. The waitress had very little patience with this little fella, he had too many questions... How much is the ice cream sundae? 75 cents she said... Oh, then how much is the vanilla scoop with sprinkles? 40 cents she said... Then how much is the single scoop with no toppings the little boy asked... 30 cents she responded in a harsh bark. OK, he said, I'll have that. He quietly ate his scoop and tidied up his space, leaving no mess. He quietly left, leaving 3 dimes and 15 cents as a tip.... The moral of the story is that the little boy could have had the scoop with the topping, but he knew that it was the right thing to leave a tip for those that serve...
The story is from memory, I received an e-mail that was probably worded better. That's the story...

tips, like the money you tip the waiter, came from the acronym To Insure Proper Service and tips were given before the meal to do just that.

The word, 'TIPS' is used as a noun & as a verb.
Tips: (n) means points, ends.
The noun in the sense "piece of confidential information" is reported to have been in use since1845
'Teaching Tips', 'Racing Tips' , 'Tips for Success'etc etc
'To Tip' is used as a verb.
It means,
(i) "give a small present of money to," (Year1610)
( ii) "to give, hand, pass," originally thieves' cant, perhaps from tip
(iii ) The meaning "give a gratuity to" is said to be in use from 1706.
