I know they are connected, but can I replace just them or do I need to replace the entire unit? Also what kind of cost am I looking at in either case?

The removal and replacement of an evaporator coil will cost you about $750 for a 3-4 ton unit. Some prices will be higher or lower.

When an evap coil is replaced, it is generally due to loading from dirt and fungi. Make sure that if the rest of your cabinet is contaminated with mold (especially the blower wheel) that you consider a clean-up, or if more practical, replacement of the air handler.

If the coil was leaking, there is a possibility of moisture in the refrigerant lines. Make certain that the lines are carefully evacuated, and that a drier is installed. Otherwise, moisture left in the lines could destroy your new equipment.

Your unit is low on freon. in case you enable it bypass too long you will blow the compressor. additionally determine you blow out the condenser from the airborne dirt and dust. airborne dirt and dust acts as a blanket blockading the condenser from dispersing the warmth from the air conditioner. Even your refrigerator and motor vehicle that has an condenser, could be wiped sparkling as quickly as each and every 6 months or quicker. maximum newer gadgets don't have a place to re-charge, government regs.
