AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave, plays with Windows Media Player and "codecs" Most commonly DIVX and Xvid. You can download the codecs at http://www.divx.com Typically these files are for larger video clips. Most movies come in around 700-800 Mega bytes with a DIVX codec

just like wma is audio,avi is for video
it is most basic format for video,all mini dv camcorder use this format to record video.
but it is very big file,so to put this file on dvd you need an encorder which will convert this in to Mpeg-2 format.
