That depends on her faith, but I'd recommend "Tibetan Book of Living & Dying."

I would just go to a bookstore and browse their psychology section.
I would probably get her a journal to write in, a good young family book, like Little Women or Anne of Green Gables, and then a mature book like How To Make Friends by Dale Carneiage.

Faith-based books may help the most, if she is religious.

Borderline religious books (such as Chicken Soup for the Soul and its counterparts) are also good, as they both relate tales of death and dying, and living after it.

Anything that gives hope, or is inspirational in nature, should work just fine.

Good luck.

I dont think reading a book can help. The Bible is always a great tool. The best thing you can buy your friend is time. Give him/her space and time.

There are books on death and dying by Kubler-Ross that are considered the best. You may want to take a look at those. Also, if your friend is Christian, there are verses that help to give hope that she will see her mother again.

I strongly recommend "Life Never Dies" by Jack Ensign Addington (20-page booklet) if your friend is a Christian or is familiar with Christianity.
The first paragraph reads:"There is one Life, eternal, indestructible, a Life that cannot die. Each one of us is a part of that life, an individualization of the One Eternal Life. Once we understand this we will cease to fear death for ourselves or our loved ones."

I don't know if your friend is religious, but you could always buy her a Bible. Many people turn to God in times of need.
