Just tell him in the heat of the moment you said something you shouldn't have. After thinking about it you thought you would come clean with him. Then let him know you do not want to be in a relationship.
In the future, keep yourself from this situation. It sounds like you must have been spending some time with guy, possibly leading him on, which is not good.

Why did you tell him you loved him in the first place? You shouldn't mess with his heart like that.
But to answer your question, tell him that you 'need space' and that things have changed since you've been together. That one always ends the relationship.
If you fancy yourself a player, don't complain about the consequences.

Just talk to him and tell him that it was something that you thought you wanted. But that you started haveing doubts and it's really not going to work. and you can be friends. It's better to end things now before you get to far ahead and somebody really gets hurt.

i think the best thing to do is to tell him the truth, and move on. the truth might make him ad for a while but he will get over that and you will no thave to live with a lie.
