i own a repair shop in Tennessee and i can answer this to help you,,it will be OK to drive it for that distance,,it will probably charge back up a little once you drive it,,but it wont hurt anything at all to drive it,,you need to let it run a few minutes though to make sure it is not going to die on you,,sometimes a weak battery can make one die,,if it runs OK,then you will be fine,,i work on Porsche's,,and vette,s and BMW,s all the time,,so you will be OK,,good luck with it,,i hope this helps.

Nice car that has dead battery syndrome. I do not recommend jump starting because mistakes happen things get shorted out. Just go and get a correct $120 BMW VARTA battery your last one lasted six years didn't it? The correct battery for inside the car trunk has vent tubes to go outside the car. Charging battery's give off hydrogen BOOM! and discharging battery's smell of sulfuric acid Rotten eggs. Difficulty a 2 out of ten scale... two big terminals 10mm an one hold down 13mm and two tubes, and on some one small wire water sensor.
After you get the battery in and car started call for an appointment so your BMW specialist can check for "DARK CURRENT" some time called parasitic electrical drains.

go ahead n try the 20 mile drive, but if your alternator is going out,it will not produce the correct amount of electrical charge needed to keep your battery up to par,and if this is the case, then you might find yourself stranded 20 miles from home,so maybe have a friend follow you on your 20 mile trip just in case.
